I have no explanation or justification for this piece. Sometimes drawings just happen.

Flashback – Leaving for Art School

Written on December 1, 2014 at 2:19 pm, by Doug Lefler

I came across this picture of me in the mid 70s, packing the old ’67 Pontiac LeMans (my first car) in preparation for making the drive from Santa Barbara to Valencia where I would where I would attend California Institute of the Arts.

Wish I still had that car.

SIDE NOTE: The car Janis drives in Seven Extraordinary Things is based on a ’65 Dodge Dart owned by one of my best friends.

Remembering Jim Kelly

Written on July 1, 2013 at 7:23 pm, by Doug Lefler

Back in the 80s I saw Jim Kelly sitting by himself in the Good Earth restaurant in Encino, CA. I introduced myself (we had a mutual friend in the entertainment business),  we had breakfast and discussed martial arts films past, present and future.

He passed away yesterday (Saturday, July 30, 2013). Two months ago I saw him at Wondercon, and considered re-introducing myself. But there was a line in front of his table and I thought “I’ll catch him at the next convention.”

There’s a lesson here.

All Things Must…

…come to an end.

It felt strange to post the last panel.  For me, finishing a story is like losing your best friends. The only thing that can get me over it is to write another story.  I hope you’ve enjoyed Seven Extraordinary Things.  Visitors to this site have been remarkably supportive, and I am grateful for the many kind emails and comments that have come to me over the last year.

My next story will be The Curious Saga of No-One.  I had planned to launch it Monday, November 29th (2010), but I’ve decided to delay it for seven days.  There are a few technical things that still have to be worked out with the new site, and frankly, I could use a week off.

The Curious Saga of No-One

Please check back in the coming days for further announcements.  In the meantime, if anyone has any questions for me regarding 7XT, the new story, or the new site you can post them here, or email me, and I will do my best to answer them.

…while patrolling in the park, we heard a shout.  There was a man engaged in hand to hand combat with an unseen opponent.  Although he was staggering, his hooks and jabs were tightly controlled, and his roundhouse kicks were impressive.  Ziggy wanted to render assistance (my Schnauzer has no love for invisible things; I know this because he barks at them all of the time).  But we had our own business to attend to and it was clear to me that whatever the man was fighting be it a spectral demon, combat robot in steal mode or reality, he was winning.  Sometimes you have to let people fight their own battles.

…to everyone who sent wishes, encouragement and suggestions at the launch of this site.

Creating art is a process of measuring out self-absorption.  Too much and you risk your work being inaccessible.  Not enough and it feels like you’re pandering to the public.

I consider myself fortunate to work in the film industry, a business that is familiar with both self-absorption and pandering.  But it is work I love.  It comes as a relief that my decision to go into it, though made against my parents’ advice, hasn’t been entirely impractical.  Films are hard to make, they always have been, and not every story that is worth telling can be neatly packaged and marketed.  I’ve had to accept the fact that some of my stories might not make it to the Cineplex; at least, not through a direct route.  There is only one other way for me to get them out of my head, and that is to draw the damn things myself.

SEVEN EXTRAORDINARY THINGS may occasionally be self-indulgent, I admit it.  It’s a personal story inspired by a time in my life that was important to me. Keeping in that spirit, this Journal is going to be filled with subjects that are important to me.  Subjects like drawing, writing, filmmaking, and most of all visual storytelling.  If these topics hold no interest for you, just enjoy the story that will be posted daily in the Chapter section.  Or build your own site and write about what you like.  Self absorption is not always a bad thing.

The launch is imminent.  Just a few bugs left to get out of the system.
